Frequency Report

The impromptu conversation is analyzed based on typology of communication strategies. Both of the participants of the impromptu conversation used seven strategies out of thirteen communication strategies. In addition, their impromptu conversation also enhanced by hand gesture and tonicity. They are also using three different approaches such interactional, psycholinguistic, and discourse while conveying the conversation in order to make that the conversation goes smoothly.

  1. Message Abandonment

For the reduction context, both of them do create message abandonment in the impromptu conversation. This aspect can be seen for both speakers as they begins to talk about an idea but they eventually unable to continue due to lack of the meaning structure, stops in mid-utterance and carry on to next idea. For this strategy, G5b created twice and G2a three times . For example, G2a said “Erm……. Actually aesthetics is something that our……(Message abandonment) What we did is make it place it as well as practical [hand gesture] where we…… (Message abandonment)”. We can see that firstly she wanted to talk about the concept of aesthetics but eventually turn to another idea. Similarly, G5b said …… It can be filled with a bread you know, the height of the bread [hand gesture], hmm…… I think\……(message abandonment) [laugh] That’s it\.” In this case, she created message abandonment as she may lack out of the meaning of the structure.

  1. Literal Switch and Literal Translation

According to Tarone 1980, L2 strategies such literal switch and literal translation are comprised in the transferring category. The joint negotiation of meaning would be salient element for the both starategies.Next, both L1 strategies seem to be used by G2a. L1 strategies included literal translation and language switch. For example, she said “…… make you safety/ la.” In this case, she use literal translation which is she translate word by word from another language. Besides, she also use language switch strategy as she used the term “la” which is the term is from Bahasa Melayu. She used once for each of the strategies.

  1. Restructuring

Both of them also used L2 strategy such as restructuring. This strategy is quite frequent used by them to construct sentences. The finding show that G2a used six times of restructuring strategy compared to G5b which she used it for twice. For examples, G2a said “We did give gift, a free gift which like stickers [hand gesture] where…… it like…… (Restructuring) just like DIY/ Do-It-Yourself/ box where you can modify and make it more……” Besides, G5b said “It is the partitions can be easily removed, so it would be easy for you…… (restructuring) for customer to clean/ it/.” In these cases, we can see that both them reformulates the syntax of the utterance. Of course, a better planning and preparation could a different as they will be able to deliver the conversation smoother and more fluently.

  1. Offer help

In addition, both of them also used the cooperative strategies such as offer help and lexical repetition. For example, G2a said “…… just put, put on your shoulder instead of hold it all over the times when you are [hand gesture]……” and G5b said “Travel?”. In this case, we can clearly see G5b is offering help by targeting item to the interlocutor.

  1. Lexical Repetition

Ting and Lau’s (2007) findings show that the frequent use of lexical repetition is particularly  practiced by those with higher linguistic ability. For example, G2a used lexical repetition of the word “maybe” for discourse and topic maintenance to highlight salience point of her example. For instance, compartments inside the box where we can put scarf, and your towel, maybe some shampoo, lotion, something that we…… we need during our  travel. And besides that, outside of the box we did put…… Ahh…… Two/ pockets/ where, maybe you can put your tissue pocket [pocket tissue]…… hmm…… maps/ and maybe your compact…… compact powder.  [hand gesture] ”

  1. Tonicity

Moreover, both of them use discourse strategy such tonicity in their impromptu conversation. According to Clennell (1994, 1995) tonicity is a form of systematic use of stress and pitch to mark new information. In this context, G5b used 32 times compared to G2a that use 23 times of tonicity which is found that rising tone used 30 times by G5b and 13 times by G2a. For example, G5b said “.…… actually this is the/ new/ edition/ of our picnic/ box/, we have the latest, ehm…… previous/ edition/ but hmm……(restructuring) previous one is very, you know, erm the colour/ is bad/, so it’s not, it’s not attractive enough for people to buy it.” Conversely, falling tones is used twice by G5b and once by G2a. For example, G5b said “It can be filled with a bread you know, the height of the bread [hand gesture], hmm…… I think\……(message abandonment) [laugh] That’s it\.”

  1. Grammar Mistake

Furthermore, there are a few of grammar mistake detected in the conversation. Usually, people do committed grammar mistake because they slipped up in verbal conversation and get away with it. In the impromptu conversation, G2a should say “three boxes” instead of “three boxes”. In addition, G2a should say “pocket tissue” instead of “tissue pocket”.

To sum up, there are six strategies such as topic avoidance, circumlocution, word coinage, approximation, appeal for assistance and topic fronting not being used by both participants. The impromptu conversation of them is good and fluent, but if they have a better self-prepared, the impromptu conversation is certainly can be improved. Besides, they have a good communication flow as both of them are listening for intent and apply some effective feedback techniques to ensure there is no communication break down during the impromptu conversation.

Neuroticism

Respondent 5

Based on the Survey 1 (v), respondent clearly falls into Neuroticism category, which is agreed to my assumption. Her anxious and insecure personality obviously can be seen through as she will ignore stranger and go away from him. Besides, she is moody and tense because she will scream only when she is sad. This aspect clearly has shown the pessimistic and negative sides of her. She likes black colour and the colour obviously indicates personality of a neurotics such depressed, dignified and unhappy with how things are. Additionally, her favorite musical instrument is flute, that is obviously appeals her personality as a shy and lonely person who enjoy her privacy. In addition, she also included in the openness to experience personality because she likes to try some new and risky sports.

Respondent’s Friend 5

Image

Based on the survey 2 (v), her friend also has mostly same thought with her as she indicates respondent as a neurotics. For example, her friend thinks that respondent mostly will scream when she sad and she always feels insecure because normally she will ignore strangers. Furthermore, her choices such black colour for respondent favorite colour and flute as respondent favorite musical instrument clearly show that respondent is a neurotic. Nevertheless, her friend does not see respondent as person as she will reject her friend invitation for outdoor activities.

To sum up, respondent and her friend response are agreed to my assumption. This is because the neurotics sides of her can be clearly seen by anyone, for example, she can easily tipped into negative emotions just because of small matter. In addition, respondent also feel that she is an openness to experience person.

Agreeableness

Respondent 4

Image

Based on Survey 1 (iv), the respondent’s response is disagrees with my assumption. Respondent does not fall into agreeableness category, but neuroticism category.  Firstly, respondent tend to voice out her disagreement loudly when she having discussion. Secondly, the cooperative, helpful and nurturing personality of agreeableness does not appeal in respondent. For example, respondent tend to wait and see when she met a lost child.  She also has problem of trusting of others when she chose to ignore strangers because of her insecure-minded. Besides, her favorite musical instrument, drum, makes her a tense, nervous and often non hyperactive restless person which clearly show negative sides of her. Her favorite colour, black, clearly show that her personality of neurotic such always feel depressed and unhappy.

Respondent’s Friend 4

Image

Based on Survey 2 (iv), respondent’s friend is disagrees that respondent is agreeable yet neurotic person because she think that respondent is an extrovert person. Firstly, her friend thinks that she is assertive and amicable as normally respondent will say ‘hi’ to strangers and she will feel excited to get to know new friends. Besides, her friend thinks that she scream when she feel excited. Additionally, respondent friend assume Violin will be respondent favorite musical instrument as she has solitary and gregarious attitude toward her friends. Additionally, her friend indicates orange colour that will be respondent’s favorite colour that brings out respondent’s extroversion personality such friendly, can easily get along well with other and happy-go-lucky person.

To sum up, respondent response is disagree to my assumption. She thinks that she actually is a neurotic instead of agreeable person. On the other hand, her friend thinks that she falls in extrovert category despite of agreeableness and neuroticism categories.
